The first episode of Doctor Who was shown on Saturday, 23 November 1963 - 47 years ago today. To celebrate, here are 10 amazing clips of famous firsts in the series, taken from the official Doctor Who website.
First Doctor
William Hartnell played the First Doctor between 1963 and
1966.
First monster
The very first monster seen in Doctor Who was on the planet Skaro
- but no, it wasn't a Dalek.
First Cybermen
The cold, emotionless, silver giants were first seen invading the
South Pole.
First Autons
The Autons made their debut in 1970, in the first story to feature
the Third Doctor.
First Silurians
The first Silurians looked very different from the ones we met
this year.
First Jo Grant
The Doctor met up with his old friend Jo again this year, but
here's her first appearance. The story, Terror of the Autons, also
introduced the Master.
First Sarah Jane
Plucky journalist Sarah Jane Smith has always had a good nose for
a story.
First K-9
Robot dog K-9 was introduced in the 1977 story The Invisible
Enemy. In this clip, we see him with the Doctor's friend Leela.
First Gallifrey
We visited the Doctor's home planet, Gallifrey, a few times before
it was destroyed in the Time War. But here's our first,
breathtaking look at it in since the series returned in 2005.
Wow!
First Eleventh
And bringing us up to date, the first words spoken by the latest
Doctor, from the beginning of this year.
